Color-Changing Teas and Invisible Inks

Today during potions with Professor Elixira, the Frogs and Owls brewed Magic Color-Changing Tea and invisible inks.

The Color-Changing Tea is brewed with Butterfly Pea Flowers mixed with a few drops of lemon juice to change the color from blue to purple to pink.

The potions class also made three different types of invisible ink. The first included baking soda and water, and can be revealed using a solution of turmeric powder and rubbing alcohol. They also experimented with fluorescent ink (made with OxiClean in water and revealed by shining a UV light on writing), and a Cobalt (II) Chloride hexahydrate solution in water. This solution is light pink when you first write in it, but it turns blue when heated and then the humidity in the air turns the message invisible again. These two worked so well that the class could barely take pictures of their writing!

Here are the recipes to try at home, but potions are tricky so make sure you have a parent nearby!
